Big test: Sun Living V 60DL

One of the most revolutionary innovations of recent years is certainly the Sun Living V 60DL. It features a completely newly developed interior layout with a folding bathroom located right behind the driver's seat, a transverse double dinette, a kitchen at the entrance, and a section of the bed situated above the trunk. In the evening, footrests are pulled out from under the bed to cover the dinette, creating a longitudinal double (or even triple) sleeping area. Despite being less than six meters long, this camper van also offers a large storage space.

Inside, van layouts are usually as like as two peas in a pod, and it’s rare to see something truly new. The Sun Living V 60DL stands out with a unique interior layout that provides plenty of living space. We spent almost the entire month of February with the Sun Living V 60DL, and it is currently one of the most affordable mass-produced vans on the European leisure vehicle market.

INNOVATIVE INTERIOR LAYOUT

Even though it didn't take first prize in the interior layout category at this year's European Innovation Awards (EIA), the new Sun Living V 60DL certainly deserved it.

We often hear complaints that camper vans from different brands look very much alike and that interior layouts are mostly identical. Therefore, the new Sun Living V 60DL is a more than welcome novelty in a flood of similar models. It is built on a Ford Transit base, measuring just under six meters in length, and is designed for vacations for two people.

Usually, we divide the description of the interior into several separate paragraphs because vans typically have distinct design units. With the V 60DL, this is nearly impossible—but we’ll try—as the entire interior is connected. It is a single, unified space extending from the steering wheel all the way to the rear wing doors. As is standard for vans, you enter the living area through the sliding door on the right side. Usually, you would "run into" the lounge here, but in the V 60DL, it has been pushed back into the central part of the van. A bathroom has been installed right behind the driver's cabin; however, this isn't a classic bathroom module, but a folding bathroom that takes up almost no space when not in use.

THE FOLDING BATHROOM

The word "folding" is perfectly appropriate for describing this innovatively designed washroom. The panels, made of synthetic materials, are connected by hinges that allow individual parts of the bathroom cabin to be easily folded and pushed against the vehicle's left wall in just a few moments. When set up, the bathroom measures 57 cm in depth and 65 cm in width; when retracted, the area between the driver's cab and the kitchen becomes—quite literally—a dance floor.

From the sliding door to the opposite wall, there is more than a meter and a half of clearance, with a width of nearly 70 cm. This totals just over a square meter of open floor space, allowing for exceptionally comfortable movement through the vehicle. With a standing height of exactly two meters in this section, the interior feels remarkably airy.

Naturally, a folding design comes with certain limitations:

  • No Dedicated Sink: There is no separate bathroom vanity; the kitchen sink serves both purposes.

  • No Cassette Toilet: Due to the folding nature, a built-in cassette toilet was impossible. Instead, a Thetford Porta Potti 565P portable toilet is housed in a cabinet under the kitchen unit, mounted on a wooden pull-out slide.

  • Mechanical Simplicity: This simple pull-out system is essentially "fail-proof" and ensures the toilet is ready for use in seconds.

The bathroom space also doubles as a shower cabin, with the floor serving as the shower tray. The fixtures are finished in a currently very trendy matte black, complemented by a powerful LED light on the ceiling.

SEPARATE KITCHEN

Usually, we write about a separate bathroom, but in the V 60DL, we are talking about a separate kitchen. It is composed of two distinct kitchen blocks: one dedicated to cooking and the other to washing up. In practice, this concept proves to be very effective.

  • The Cooking Block: Located next to the sliding door, this unit houses a compressor refrigerator. It is positioned at the front of the block and features a double-hinged door, allowing it to be opened from both the inside and outside of the vehicle. The gas stove comes with two burners and a protective glass cover.

  • The Washing Block: The second unit holds the storage drawers and a stainless steel sink. Along the wall, they have added a cabinet with tambour (slat) doors and shelving, while above it sits a vanity cabinet with a large mirror.

A DINETTE THAT’S A LOUNGE

Since the V 60DL is designed specifically for two travelers (who make up about 70% of the van market), the lounge area has been appropriately streamlined. While the front seats swivel, there is no table directly in front of them.

Instead, behind the kitchen on a 30 cm raised platform, they’ve installed a transverse dinette featuring two benches and a pull-out table that slides out from under the bed.

  • Dimensions: The benches are 93 cm long, while the 50 cm wide dining table is just 5 cm shorter than the benches.

  • Comfort: Thanks to high-quality foam, the seating is pleasantly firm and stable.

  • Storage: Between the benches, there is a 50 x 93 cm platform containing a handy floor compartment.

A VAN FOR TWO SLEEPYHEADS

In the rear, above the luggage compartment, is a permanent transverse bed measuring 188 x 107 cm. It’s perfect for a quick afternoon nap while one partner rests and the other sits in the dinette reading or browsing the web.

The developers chose not to use side flares (extensions) for the bedroom. Instead, they designed a transverse bed that can be transformed into a massive longitudinal bed in a few simple steps:

  1. Remove the dinette cushions.

  2. Pull out two bed extensions from under the main mattress.

  3. These extensions rest where the benches were, creating a massive sleeping surface measuring 188 x 200 cm.

Finding a bed that large in a van under six meters is almost unheard of!

Added Comforts:

  • Insulation: All interior walls are lined with thermoformed felt as standard, which feels cozy and warm in winter.

  • Heating: The vehicle features a diesel-powered water heating system as standard equipment.

A CONTINUOUS RING OF OVERHEAD CABINETS

You can never have enough cupboard space, and even though the V 60DL is packed with cabinets, hidden drawers, and various storage spots, they’ve also installed a continuous ring of overhead cabinets beneath the ceiling. This row wraps around both the lounge and the bedroom in one uninterrupted sequence.

The cabinets feature a push-to-open mechanism, which eliminates the need for protruding handles. This design choice isn't just about looks; it means there is no danger of accidentally hitting your head on a latch while you're moving around or resting in the bedroom.

A MASSIVE STORAGE COMPARTMENT

Six-meter vans usually have a storage area in the rear located under a fixed transverse double bed. This space is typically restricted by side cabinets housing the fresh water tank, the water heater, and the gas locker, as well as the width of the bed itself.

Thanks to its unique living area layout, the V 60DL offers a significantly larger storage compartment positioned transversely across the vehicle. At its widest point, it measures 167 cm in width, 112 cm in depth, and 99 cm in height. On the right side, there is an extension underneath the dinette platform that allows for the transport of items up to 204 cm long—perfect for skis or smaller surfboards.

During our test, we managed to fit a sled, camping chairs, and two 27.5-inch bicycles (though we had to remove the front wheels of the bikes as they were a few centimeters too tall for the space). For the sake of the photoshoot, we even temporarily reconfigured the trunk into a "yoga room."

CONCLUSION

The Sun Living V 60DL is an exceptionally interesting camper van concept for two that avoids following classic interior layouts or the typical "#vanlife" builds seen on Instagram. It is unique enough to stand out in a sea of identical models, while simultaneously offering a vast amount of living space and a comfortable bedroom for two. I must admit, it’s been a long time since I’ve been this impressed.
